Impact Summary

The leaderboard was designed to boost student engagement and motivation by fostering a sense of accomplishment and encouraging friendly competition. This approach aimed to increase user retention and overall platform activity
Project
Backgrounds
Stakeholders observed that course completion rates were much lower than student conversion rates. After several failed attempts to fix it, the design team stepped in to identify the root cause through user research and improve completion rates
Discover
Problem
By closely analyzing real user scenarios, we identified the most critical pain points that our design needed to address.
01
Lack of Learning Motivation in Students
User research revealed that students were losing motivation due to a lack of recognition, visible progress, and peer interaction. Without a sense of achievement or comparison, many struggled to stay engaged and complete their courses.
02
Limited Visibility Into Student Learning Progress
Our research showed that students couldn't clearly track their learning progress, which left them feeling unsure about how far they had come or how much was left. This lack of visibility reduced their motivation and made it harder to stay committed to course completion.
03
Missing Element of Friendly Competition
User research showed that students lacked opportunities to engage with peers in a fun and motivating way. The absence of friendly competition made the learning experience feel isolating, reducing motivation and long-term engagement.
Project Goal
Based on user research, our goal was to make learning more exciting and motivating for students. We aimed to design a system that would help users clearly track their progress and feel a sense of accomplishment. By introducing elements of recognition and friendly peer interaction, we sought to boost both student engagement and course completion, ultimately improving the conversion-to-completion ratio

Design Solution
The objective was to boost student motivation and course completion by designing a system that encourages progress tracking and peer-driven engagement
Proposed Solutions
As a solution, we designed a leaderboard that visualizes learning analytics and encourages friendly competition, making progress more visible and learning more motivating.
01
Analyzing Student Activities
Based on user insights, we included detailed analysis of student learning and related activities to help students identify their learning gaps and improve their overall learning experience
02
Track Student Progress Effectively
The leaderboard helps students see their learning progress clearly by showing performance, milestones, and how they compare with peers. This motivates them to stay engaged and improve where needed.
03
Simplifying Data Through Visualization
We transformed complex learning data into clear, visual insights making it easier for students to understand their progress, compare performance, and stay motivated throughout their learning journey.
04
Gamified Experience to Boost Engagement
To boost engagement, we created a gamified experience using coins, badges, and top learner tags. These elements introduced a sense of achievement and friendly competition, motivating students to stay active and complete their courses
Research &
Discovery
We spoke with users and stakeholders to uncover key insights and align user needs with business goals for an effective leaderboard solution
Research Phase
01
Data Analysis
We collected and analyzed student activity data to better understand learning behaviors and engagement patterns. These insights guided the creation of a system that promotes motivation, progress tracking, and peer interaction
02
User Interviews
We conducted user interviews with students to understand why they lose interest in learning and to identify the factors that keep them engaged and motivated.
03
Competitive Analysis
We explored platforms like Stack, Udemy, Coursera, Upskill, and Skillshare to understand how they use leaderboards to motivate users. This helped us uncover user expectations and identify opportunities to create a more engaging and effective leaderboard experience
Concept
Visualization
We visually explored and sketched multiple concept ideas to shape an engaging progress and motivation system. This helped us quickly test, refine, and communicate the best approach for improving the student experience

Sketching and
Alterations
We conducted pen-and-paper tests and stakeholder workshops to refine early sketches. Through continuous feedback and iteration, we shaped a usable and effective structure for the Leaderboard

Mid-Fidelity
Designs
We designed mid-fidelity wireframes to outline the structure and key features of the experience. Based on feedback from focus groups, we refined the designs to better align with user needs and behavior

Visual Style
Guide
We established a unified visual language by defining color schemes, typography, and iconography, ensuring a consistent look and feel across the app. Additionally, we developed a style guide to uphold design consistency in future updates

High - Fidelity
Designs

Project Result
Post-launch feedback showed increased user engagement and motivation, leading to higher platform activity
